We are now in our second year of lockdown as I write this and, while everyone’s situation is different in one way or another, we all have one thing in common. We’ve been pushed out of our comfort zone. Whether it’s working a full-time job from home, having the kids at home all day, and having to teach and entertain them, or maybe you don’t have the best living situation….
But blogging can give us an escape away from our daily lives.
Now, before we go into the reasons why you should start a blog….let me get this right out in the open. It’s not going to be super easy.
- You need to get your website up and going and if you’re not really techie (like me), this can mean putting in long hours and is a learning curve.
- You need to create great content, and if you’re not a writer you’ll have to put in the time and effort learning this too.
- If you’re aiming to monetize your blog, you will need a strategy to get traffic to your site.
Actually, the list of things to learn is endless. BUT, how incredible is it that we can learn all of this information online and become so knowledgeable?!

Reasons To Start A Blog
Reason No 1 – A blog is something you can call your own
Whatever your goal for your blog is, first and foremost it begins as a hobby. You don’t start a blog about something you have no interest in. Where’s the fun in that? You choose something that you’re passionate about, such as baking, gardening, travelling. If these are things that you love to do, then you’ll love even more to write about them.
Blogging gives you the opportunity to do something for yourself. It gives you an escape away from your busy life to do something that you love.
Reason No. 2 – To help people
Are you an expert in something? Maybe you have perfected gluten free baking. Or you have come up with an exercise routine that has helped you lose weight and keep it off. If so, by creating a blog, you can share your expertise and help countless others in the process.
Reason No. 3 – To improve your writing skills
You don’t need to be a published author to start a blog. I have never been a writer. But, the more you do something, the better you become at it, and the same goes for writing. I find the more I read, the more I become better at writing.
Reason No. 4 – To make an extra income
There are many ways of earning an income from a blog, such as:
Affiliate Marketing – This is one of the most popular ways of monetising your blog. It may be that you recommend a certain hotel in your blog post. With an affiliate program, you can link the hotel on your blog to the company who sells the product and they give you a percentage commission.
Sponsored Posts – this is when a company asks you to try out their product and write a review. Sometimes you are just given the product for free, but you can also be paid to write the review.
Advertisements – I’m sure you’ve seen on websites where advertisements pop up or are located throughout the site. You can get paid to have these ads on your website too. However, you will need to have a lot of traffic to your site to make anything worthwhile.
Sell e-books – if you are expert in a certain topic, why not sell an e-book on your website.
Sell courses – again, if you are an expert in something and people want to learn more, you can create a course to sell to your clients.
Reason No. 5 – For the community
I’m telling you, if there were only one reason to start a blog, this would be it. The blogging community is just fantastic. When I was first starting out, I posted on a blogging Facebook group saying that I wanted to launch my blog by the end of the month and to please wish me luck. The amount of comments saying ‘You got this’ and ‘You go girl’….I still go back to that post every now and again to remind myself that I got this.
Make sure you join a few Facebook groups as they are full of tips and tricks and encouragement. And really, I don’t know how I would have done all this without them. I recommend Boss Girl Bloggers to get you going.
Reason No. 6 – It’s therapeutic
Just being able to hash out what’s on your mind is good therapy, right? Being able to rant about something that’s annoyed you or rave about something that you’re excited about. Think of blogging as if you’re having a conversation with someone. We know that keeping a diary and journaling is good for mental health. Blogging is just another form of journaling.
Blogging also improves your self-esteem. I mean, just look at what you’ve created. You’ve built a website from scratch; you’ve written blog posts; and you’ve event gotten people to come to your site and read your posts. Sometimes, they’ll even leave you a nice comment!
Reason No. 7 – To improve your technical skills
Starting out as a non-techie, I had no idea how to create a website, how to link it to my social media accounts. I took a few courses, some good, some not so good. But I have improved my technical skills tenfold.
There are many free courses and videos you can watch to help you, but ultimately, if you are serious about blogging and learning everything there is to know, I suggest investing in some of the paid courses also.
Reason No. 8 – You can do it from anywhere
Let’s say you’ve gotten to the stage where you’re earning money from your blog. And you might even have been able to give up your 9-5 job to work on your blog full time!
What’s to stop you packing up and moving to another country for a couple of months. Or going on a round-the-world tour, blogging and earning money along the way.
Picture this….you wake up on a Caribbean island, lay on the hammock on the beach, with a cocktail sat beside you, and tap out your next blog post on your laptop.
